What is FASD?

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a term used to describe the permanent impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol during pregnancy resulting in a spectrum of physical, emotional, behavioural and neurological characteristics.

Often the condition goes undiagnosed or is diagnosed for example as autism or ADHD rather than those conditions being recognised as presentations of FASD.

This condition is preventable only when there is no prenatal alcohol exposure.

Manchester Settlement is helping in a preventative way by raising awareness of FASD within the local communities of East Manchester.
We are doing this by circulating informing to families and other organisations about FASD from our centre and through our networks.

We have a monthly stay and play session for anyone concerned that their young child may have been affected by FASD and a monthly drop in session hosted by our mummy mentors where anyone affected by FASD can meet up with each other in a safe and non judgemental environment.
